THREE SAPS MEMBERS NABBED FOR CORRUPTION IN STERKSPRUIT
STERKSPRUIT: The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Andre Swart has expressed gratitude and appreciation to the Provincial Anti Corruption Team for their relentless efforts to eradicate corrupt activities within the South African Police Service in the Eastern Cape.
This follows after the Provincial Anti Corruption Unit arrested three (3) police Officers of corruption after extorting money from a suspect.
According to the information, the three members abused their authority on the 21 April 2020 as they were enforcing and implementing the Disaster Management Act Regulations. They were effecting an arrest of a person who contravened the regulations when they are alleged to have solicited a sum of R1500 from the suspect's boss in exchange for the release of the suspect. Reports continue to suggest that on arrival at the Community Service Centre, these police officers released the suspect without charging him for the offense he had committed.
The three members aged between 39 and 43 have been charged for corruption and appeared in the Sterkspruit Magistrate Court for a formal bail hearing today 18 May 2020 and were granted bail. The case has been set for trial on the 30th July 2020 in Sterkspruit Magistrate Court.
