Fellow South African,
Whether a business owner is black or white, male or female, young or old… has no bearing on which employees are affected by the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).
So, whilst South Africans like you come to terms with this historically difficult time, it is indefensible that the South African government should discriminate when deciding who is deserving of their help and who is not.
After filing papers in the High Court to urgently prevent the unlawful use of B-BBEE status, race, gender or age as criteria for relief or assistance at this tough time, we have approached the potential source of most of the relief funding, the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
We have written to the head of the IMF asking them to condemn the South African government and instruct it not to use IMF money in a way that discriminates, and we await a reply.
South Africa needs as many small businesses as possible to survive the COVID-19 pandemic, our livelihoods depend on it.
